Cold air invading this morning will set up a major winter storm by this afternoon through Saturday morning. An unsettled, chilly weather pattern continues into the New Year.
TODAY
An area of low pressure will approach the region with increasing clouds and snow developing in the afternoon. Winds will veer to the northeast at 5 to 15 mph. High temperatures will range from the mid to upper 20s over the interior, mid to upper 20s in the New York City metropolitan area, upper 20s to lower 30s in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, and lower to mid-30s along the southern New Jersey coast.
TONIGHT
An area of low pressure will redevelop off the coast with periods of snow and sleet over the interior and New York City metropolitan area, a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and rain in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, snow and freezing rain in southern Pennsylvania, and snow to rain in southern New Jersey. Winds will veer to the east at 5 to 10 mph. Low temperatures will range from the mid to upper 20s over the interior, mid to upper 20s in the New York City metropolitan area, upper 20s to lower 30s in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, and lower to mid-30s along the southern New Jersey coast.
TOMORROW
The area of low pressure will exit the region with the wintry precipitation changing over to snow before ending by noon. Winds will back to the northeast at 5 to 15 mph. High temperatures will be in the upper 20s to lower 30s over the interior and the New York City metropolitan area, and in the lower to mid-30s in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
TOMORROW NIGHT
High pressure will be in control with scattered cloud cover. Winds will be from the north at 1 to 5 mph. Low temperatures will range from the mid to upper 10s over the interior, upper 10s to lower 20s in the suburbs, and lower to mid-20s in urban areas.
SUNDAY
A cold front will produce scattered showers in the afternoon. Some freezing drizzle will be possible. Winds will veer to the south at 1 to 5 mph. High temperatures will range from the mid to upper 30s over the interior and upper 30s to lower 40s along the coast.
MONDAY
A cold front will move through the region with scattered showers. Winds will be from the southwest at 5 to 15 mph. Low temperatures will range from the mid to upper 30s over the interior and upper 30s to lower 40s along the coast. High temperatures will range from the upper 40s to lower 50s over the interior, lower to mid-50s in the New York City metropolitan area, and mid to upper 50s in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
