An area of low pressure approaching from the Great Lakes on Sunday will transition to the coastal waters by Sunday night, which will support an area of precipitation over the region.
The precipitation will develop by around noon on Sunday with conditions cold enough for all snow in the Poconos, Catskills, Hudson Highlands, and Hudson River Valley. Meanwhile, rain showers will break out throughout much of the rest of the region.
From 3 PM Sunday to 4 AM Monday, periods of light to moderate snow will continue throughout northeastern Pennsylvania, the Catskills, the Hudson River Valley, northern New Jersey, and much of Connecticut. Due to the process of transitioning the low-pressure system to the coastal waters, lifting will be enhanced which will support some bursts of heavier snowfall. Meanwhile, a mix of rain and snow will develop along the coastal plain, however, surface temperatures along the coast will remain above freezing in the lower 40s falling towards the mid-30s, preventing snow accumulation.
From 4 AM to 8 AM Monday, the precipitation will come to an end from northwest to southeast. As the entire atmosphere will be cold enough for snowfall, the rain/snow mix is expected to change over to snow before ending. However, due to the warm nature of roadways and other surfaces, snow accumulation in the I-95 corridor will range from a trace to 1″ and mostly on cold surfaces.
