Cold air invading this afternoon will set up a major winter storm by tomorrow afternoon through Saturday morning.  An unsettled, chilly weather pattern continues into the New Year.

TODAY: CHRISTMAS

A cold front will move through the region with variable clouds and scattered showers.  Winds will veer to the northwest at 5 to 15 mph.  High temperatures will range from the upper 30s to lower 40s over the interior and mid to upper 40s along the coast.  Temperatures will fall through the 30s and 20s later this afternoon and evening.

TONIGHT

High pressure will produce clear skies.  Winds will be from the northwest at 5 to 10 mph.  Low temperatures will range from the single digits to the lower 10s over the interior, mid to upper 10s in the suburbs, and upper 10s to lower 20s in urban areas.

TOMORROW

An area of low pressure will approach the region with increasing clouds and snow developing in the afternoon.  Winds will veer to the northeast at 5 to 15 mph.  High temperatures will range from the mid to upper 20s over the interior, mid to upper 20s in the New York City metropolitan area, upper 20s to lower 30s in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, and lower to mid-30s along the southern New Jersey coast.

TOMORROW NIGHT

An area of low pressure will redevelop off the coast with periods of snow and sleet over the interior and New York City metropolitan area, a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and rain in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, snow and freezing rain in southern Pennsylvania, and snow to rain in southern New Jersey.  Winds will veer to the east at 5 to 10 mph.  Low temperatures will range from the mid to upper 20s over the interior, mid to upper 20s in the New York City metropolitan area, upper 20s to lower 30s in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, and lower to mid-30s along the southern New Jersey coast.

SATURDAY

The area of low pressure will exit the region with the wintry precipitation changing over to snow before ending by noon.  Winds will back to the northeast at 5 to 15 mph.  High temperatures will be in the upper 20s to lower 30s over the interior and the New York City metropolitan area, and in the lower to mid-30s in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

SUNDAY

A cold front will produce scattered showers in the afternoon.  Some freezing drizzle will be possible.  Winds will veer to the south at 1 to 5 mph.  Low temperatures will range from the mid to upper 10s over the interior, upper 10s to lower 20s in the suburbs, and lower to mid-20s in urban areas.  High temperatures will range from the mid to upper 30s over the interior and lower to mid-40s along the coast.

MONDAY

A cold front will move through the region with scattered showers.  Low temperatures will range from the mid to upper 30s over the interior and lower to mid-40s along the coast.  High temperatures will range from the mid- to upper 40s over the interior, to the lower to mid-50s in the New York City metropolitan area, and to the mid- to upper 50s in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

TUESDAY

High pressure will produce clear skies.  Low temperatures will range from the lower to mid-20s over the interior and mid to upper 20s along the coast.  High temperatures will range from the mid to upper 20s over the interior and lower to mid-30s along the coast.

WEDNESDAY: NEW YEAR’S EVE

Scattered clouds with snow showers are expected by evening.  Low temperatures will range from the upper 10s to the lower 20s over the interior and mid to upper 20s along the coast.  High temperatures will range from the lower to mid-30s over the interior and upper 30s to lower 40s along the coast.

THURSDAY: NEW YEAR’S DAY

A cold front will produce scattered snow showers.  Low temperatures will range from the lower to mid-20s over the interior and mid to upper 20s along the coast.  High temperatures will range from the lower to mid-30s over the interior and mid-30s along the coast.
