Powerful Blast Of Snow This Evening

The second half of an impressive early December winter storm will continue to bring heavy snow to the interior today and now to the coast this afternoon and evening.

As the low-pressure system pulls away from the area today and an inverted trough forms over central New Jersey on west through eastern Pennsylvania, snow showers will linger over the interior this morning and mix over from rain to snow along the coast.  An area of moderate to heavy snowfall will consolidate this afternoon between 1 PM to 3 PM over northeastern Pennsylvania, the Catskills, Hudson River Valley, the New York City metro, and northern to central New Jersey.  This band of heavy snow will rotate through the northern suburbs of Philadelphia, central New Jersey, northern New Jersey, and the New York City metropolitan area while expanding in coverage with the worst conditions from 3 PM on through 8 PM and then tapering off as the snow band rotates through Connecticut and Long Island.  Meanwhile, light to moderate snow will also develop for the Philadelphia metropolitan area on the south including much of southern New Jersey.  Winds will back from the northeast to northwest at 10 to 20 mph with gusts over 30 mph.  Visibility will be poor and there is potential for snowfall to exceed expected amounts, especially in northern New Jersey and the New York City metropolitan area.  Travel is not suggested from 3 PM to 8 PM tonight.  Temperatures will fall through the 30’s and 20’s through this evening.  Below is the current forecast.

Scattered snow showers will linger on through tomorrow morning followed by clearing skies in the afternoon and evening.  Winds will be from the northwest at 5 to 15 mph.  Temperatures will range from the lower to mid 20’s over the interior and upper 20’s to lower 30’s along the coast for lows and mid 30’s over the interior and upper 30’s to lower 40’s along the coast for highs.

A weak cold front will follow on Wednesday with scattered clouds.  Winds will be from the west at 5 to 10 mph.  Temperatures will range from the mid 10’s to lower 20’s over the interior and mid 20’s to lower 30’s along the coast for lows and upper 30’s to mid 40’s for highs.

A series of weak cold fronts will follow Thursday through Sunday with scattered cloud cover.  Temperatures on Thursday will range from the mid 20’s to lower 30’s for lows and mid 30’s to lower 40’s for highs.  Temperatures on Friday will range from the lower 10’s to mid 20’s for lows and mid 30’s to upper 40’s fro highs.  Temperatures on Saturday will range from the lower to mid 20’s for lows and mid 20’s to lower 30’s for highs.  Temperatures on Sunday will range from the single digits to lower 20’s for lows and mid 30’s to upper 40’s for highs.
