A powerful winter storm is expected to impact the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas early Thursday through early Friday morning. This low pressure system will track from the Gulf Coast to the New Jersey coastal waters between Wednesday morning and Thursday night and then towards southern New England by Friday morning.
Several impacts from the storm can be expected. The heaviest snowfall will be to the north and west of the major cities. However, the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas will have significant snowfall and ice accumulation before changing over to a brief period of rain. The immediate coast may escape the heavy snowfall, however the threat for coastal flooding will loom large.
Any shift in the expected storm track will have significant impacts on the snowfall accumulations. A shift to the east of 25 miles to 50 miles would bring the heaviest snowfalls to the immediate coast.
